The during the 12th century rate of Ionian from the Byzantine Empire and the eve of Corfu in the Western domination of Venice notably led to a different residential development from the rest of mainland Greece. For safety reasons the building activity in the city of Corfu is confined within the walls and flat rate residential development. The creation of high-rise buildings with narrow cobbled streets, alleyways called Kantounia exhausted every available space. The architecture of Corfu is characterized by multi-storey mansions of the nobility, country homes and cottages. The three-storey mansions of the nobility (Kapodistrias, Ventura ) are impressive and have luxurious interior. The mansions of the nobility in the countryside meant for summer family accommodation surrounded by large tracts of land (Kompitsi, Ventura). Rural houses are usually two-storey building with landscaped gardens and full of flowers. The functional side of the buildings completed by special buildings such as presses, windmills and mills. The houses are painted in traditional colors , fuchsia, red , ocher - the architecture of the facades with arched arcades called "volta" making the unique which is why since 2007 the Corfu town is on UNESCO.
